Data sources

Social Exclusion Unit - UK Government
A unit in the Cabinet Office aiming to produce joined-up government help to poor communities. A useful source of statistics - but beware, since it looks to us as if sometimes data is presented in ways that show off the government's achievements, rather than allowing serious analysis. So when you read how many people have been helped by a scheme, you need to compare it with the total population at risk, or to consider what would have happened in the absence of government intervention. So take it with a pinch of salt.

Oxford University Library Services
This is by far the best place to search to see whether there are books or journals covering your field of interest. Many of the services are freely available to members of the public, though some are restricted to students and staff. The electronic links are excellent, and the 'union catalogue' allows you to search for any book that has ever been published in the UK. These can then be ordered from your local public library.

Funding sources

Community Foundation
Grants for local community renewal in Sunderland area; many links to similar organisations throughout the UK. Very useful site.

The Princes Trust
Large trust with similar aims to us. Also helps individuals (which we do not!)

access-funds.co.uk
Commercial site giving a useful directory of grant-making bodies in the UK. We know nothing about this organisation and are neither recommending or discouraging their use; but the directory is very useful.

Charities Aid Foundation
Helps all UK charities and donors. Maintains a directory of grant-making trusts and also gives direct access to some funds.

Scarman Trust
A trust with very similar aims to us, and more money

Projects we have helped

Community Service Volunteers
Volunteer placement in the UK. We are alway intrested in receiving applications from individual CSV volunteers who want to start community projects in the area in which they are working. That is why the Wakeham Trust was originally founded.

Framework
Housing organisation setting up group of trained ex-resident volunteers to help homeless people move into their own tenancies, by practical help with moving, teaching decorating and DIY skills etc. Bigger than we normally like to help, but so interesting that we decided to make an exception.

The Greenhouse Trust
An environmental project in Norwich. We helped in its early days, but it is now too big for us to help. Good description of its history and what it does; useful source of inspiration?

The Right Track Foundation
Volunteer project in Bradford aimed at reducing youth crime. We helped a small offshoot of the organisation to establish a youth club for young people over 12 in small village. Have already got premises which has been re-decorated and re-wired by volunteers and the young people are responsible for raising running costs themselves with no help from local government.

Bedlam Theatre
We helped the Bedlam Theatre company get going with a £75 grant in 1994; it seemed an interesting and challenging project undertaken by young people in a part of the world that had relatively little going on by way of unconventional performing arts. Since then it has grown and prospered!

South West Belfast Community Forum
The Forum represents 21 community groups and is applying of behalf of Youth programme which will supply youth volunteers with equipment to improve a piece of waste ground which has fallen to neglect. Need to repaint walls, clear site of rubbish, resurface. A small number of trees planted and seats placed for local residents. We made a £250 grant in 2000.

Wednesbury Listings Project
Local social entrepreneur seeking to set up a freesheet listing events taking place in this Black Country town. We made a small grant to encourage the project, and there is now an on-line listing of events.

Ananda Project
Extremely interesting project combining interest in arts with third-world community development.

Rochdale Special Needs Cycling
Innovative project buying and adapting bikes for children with special needs. Larger than we usually support (so we can\'t back many others like it), but a very good idea.

Time Banks
People sharing skills and working for each other. This is the national organisation (too big for us to fund) but we would like to help local projects to start up.

Away With You
Small-scale Community development projects near Pondicherry. We are able to help these overseas projects because we have strong local contacts. We do not normally help non-UK projects.
